At Jumpcut, we ditch the traditional lecture-style course and utilize storytelling, cinematography, and soundtracks to make each course feel like a movie. Jumpcut is a Y combinator and venture-backed startup that creates cinematic online courses for entrepreneurs.

The founding team at Jumpcut has years of experience creating binge-worthy content — we’ve created multiple viral YouTube channels that now have over 4.5 million subscribers and over 500 million views. We’re now taking that content creation experience and applying it to the monotonous world of online education.

If you’ve ever taken an online course, you already know that 99% of them suck. That’s because they all do the same thing: record a dry and uninspiring instructor who talks to the camera for hours on end. While this is fantastic for getting over an Ambien addiction, it’s atrocious for actual learning.

Think about what can be done with video: we have the ability to create things like Avatar, The Dark Knight, and Game of Thrones, but the status quo when it comes to online courses is this. In an ice cream parlor of unlimited flavors, every other online education company has opted for vanilla. We have our eye on the mint triple chocolate chip birthday cake cookie dough with strawberry whipped cream and banana nut sprinkles.

Our team is approaching online learning in a completely new way: combining educational content with compelling stories, captivating cinematography, creative soundtracks, and much more. Who you'll be working with:

1. Create and test 6 new revenue streams (or improve current ones) that help bring in an additional $10+ million in revenue in 2019.
2. Create two new customer acquisition systems to supplement existing ones (ex. a new front-end offer that's profitable on Facebook/YouTube ads).
What you’ll do:
  • Find, test, and grow new marketing channels and tactics to bring in an additional ten million dollars in annual revenue. (Upsell sequences, free+shipping front-end offers, new continuity and ascension offers).
  • Brainstorm innovative new marketing funnels, build them, and then test them out in the real-world. (Can you dive into Snapchat Ads, figure out the platform, and build it into a 7-figure revenue channel for us almost entirely on your own?)
  • Craft long-form Video Sales Letters, product launches, and automated marketing funnels that pull in huge conversion rates. (You should know what PLF means and have plenty of experience leveraging it.)

    Director of User Acquisition
    What the job entails:

    Do you like poop? Of course you don’t. But apparently, many people do. This is exemplified by two of the most viral internet ads of our generation: Poo-pourri and Squatty Potty (look it up).

    Jumpcut is an education company that sells online courses. We make most of our money through paid acquisition -- that means we spend between $500,000 to $1M a month on social media sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat on funny, viral advertisements like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H-H3l3v-gE&feature=youtu.be

    We are looking for someone who is clever, creative, and analytical to be our Director of User Acquisition and to create similar advertising experiences for our potential customers. Your responsibilities will be centered around the creation of ads (text, image, and video) that convert to sales and -- more importantly -- have the potential to go viral. You'll be managing this entire process: experimenting with new creatives we want to test, managing our creative team to get those assets out, and working with our operations and analytics team to release those ads and then iterate on them.

    We’re currently operating mostly on YouTube and Facebook, but we’ll need your help in expanding to other platforms as well. You'll also be managing a creative marketing team (producer, video editor, motion graphics artist, marketing designer, etc). Some of these positions we already have in-house, and some you will have to recruit/hire yourself.

    As the Director of User Acquisition, you'll have one of the most important leadership jobs at Jumpcut, as most of our revenue comes from converting cold traffic into leads.

    Who you'll be working with:

    This job will report directly to our CEO, Kong. In 2018, Kong and Peter (COO) have been the main people responsible for our advertising efforts on YouTube and Facebook, and you'll be working with them directly. Moreover, we have a remote team of five advertising analysts that do the day to day work on the platforms that you will immediately start managing on the first day.

    Outcomes:
    You will increase ad spend by 20% every quarter.
    You will maintain an average of at least 4x ROAS on each platform we advertise on.
    Technical requirements we're looking for:
  • At least 2 years experience on paid acquisition with a consumer-facing product
  • Deep knowledge of Facebook Ads or Google Ads, and management of 6 to 7-figure monthly budgets
  • Nice to have: Knowledge on other paid acquisition platforms (e.g. other social media or display networks)
  • Non-Technical requirements we're looking for:
  • Obsession with marketing and virality
  • Ability to think outside the box and come up with 10x ideas

    What the job entails:

    Most people like motion graphics because they’re “so pretty” or “fun to watch”. Not us.

    We understand that these graphics are powerful communication and storytelling devices...which is why we need creatives like you in order to make the best online courses in the world.

    We’re looking for someone who is ridiculously creative and has a thoughtful approach to crafting motion graphics. Someone who watches a Vox video and thinks, “I can do that...but better.”

    Your responsibilities will revolve around brainstorming, writing, and creating engaging motion graphics that represent complex concepts. You’ll be working alongside a seasoned creative team of viral video experts who have generated over 1 billion organic views. Because our team is small, every single person (including yourself) holds a huge amount of creative say in every project we do.
    What you'll do:
  • Create wonderfully beautiful motion graphics for everything we produce (when necessary). Graphics manifest as: full builds, partial builds, and kinetic typography.
  • Improve our students learning experience by illustrating complex concepts through easy to understand motion graphics.
  • Improve video ad conversions by 10% via motion graphics.

    99.9% of online courses suck because they aren’t carefully crafted by creative, compelling writers. We’re approaching online courses a little bit differently -- we believe that writers like you are a crucial ingredient to changing how effective online education can be.

    Jumpcut is a Y Combinator company, and went through the startup accelerator in summer 2016. We've raised around $2M to date in venture funding, and are currently profitable. We create cinematic online courses with some of the world’s biggest influencers. Our founding team has years of experience creating binge-worthy content -- and now we are on a mission to interrupt the online education industry by creating courses for the modern world that are as addictive as your favorite TV show.

    We are looking for a creative senior writer to write informative and entertaining online courses for our platform. Each course will incorporate elements of storytelling, excerpts from interviews that we conduct, and scientific research in order to teach our students in the most entertaining and thorough way possible.

    The below videos serve as inspiration for our courses. They are shorter versions of what we strive to accomplish: detailed information delivered in an incredibly entertaining, cinematic way:

    Each of these videos is different, but their similarities are why we continuously turn back to them and those who created them for inspiration:

    • Incredibly inspiring, useful, and unique information
    • Exceptionally well thought out visuals that incorporate a huge variety of different mediums (interviews, sound bites, b-roll, news clips, footage shot by their team, motion graphics, kinetic typography)
    • A feeling of premium quality
    • Conversational language that anybody can understand and follow along with

    Who you'll be working with:

    As our first senior writer, you'll be working directly with Kel, our Head of Content. Right now, the course writing at Jumpcut is being done in a tag-team manner; for example, in the course we're currently working on right now, Mahim (our copywriter) is working with Kong (our CEO) to write it. Once you join, you'll be responsible for all of the course writing, and work directly with Kel on revising and editing the scripts. As you write them, you'll also be in meetings with our entire creative and marketing teams (Jessica, Brandon, Kong primarily) to gather requirements and insights from them.

    Outcomes:
    In 2019, you'll help us research and write the next 3 courses that we create.
    In 2020 and beyond, you'll learn to manage a team of writers and become their senior editor.
    What you'll do:
  • Be the chief course writer for our upcoming courses
  • Deeply research each course topic through articles, books, interviews, etc.
  • Outline the entire course with the help of experts in that field
  • Engage in curriculum design
  • Create engaging assignments that help students internalize the lessons
  • Manage a team of writers in the future
  • Technical requirements we're looking for:
  • 3+ years of relevant experience (editor at a publishing house, journalistic writer, course writer, creative writer, ghostwriter, etc)
  • Writing samples that demonstrate your ability to teach in an engaging way. (These should be journalistic: can be blog posts, video scripts, think tank research, etc)
  • Strong research skills (you should be able to find compelling information on any topic)
  • Management or entrepreneurial experience -- you should be a strong communicator and know how to manage others
  • Nice to have: experience writing for video
  • Non-technical requirements (e.g. behaviors) we're looking for:
  • You deeply love learning, and have a genuine enthusiasm for teaching
  • You can produce thorough, unique, and organized research on any topic
  • You can take dry information and transform it into a compelling lesson by using elements of storytelling & creative writing

    You will be responsible for:

    1. Production and Production Management. In 2019 we are launching 3 courses that you will be responsible for managing; the first of which is a course on Facebook Advertising. As our organization continues to grow, the number and diversity of courses will steadily increase. Your job will be to help lead the strategic and business planning of our production business, manage projects and budgets, oversee the production team, and execute on all logistics.

    2. Scaling and Growing the Department. We have an amazing founding team, and we need to scale it. You will be responsible for helping build and shape the department further and developing growth tracks for your team.

    Who you are working with:

    You will be working closely with executive leadership and reporting to our CEO, Kong. You will also be working alongside a seasoned creative team of viral video experts who have generated over 1 billion organic views. Our team is still small (but amazing), and every single person holds a tremendous amount of input and weight.
    For this role, you must have:
  • 3+ years of experience managing/building a production team of at least 15 people on set
  • An ability to identify top 5% of talent when it comes to: writers, DPs, editors, etc.
  • A successful track record of implementing best practices, processes, and evaluation tools

Our founding team has years of experience creating binge-worthy content -- and now we are on a mission to interrupt the online education industry by creating courses for the modern world that are as addictive as your favorite TV show.

    We’re looking for an innovative designer who loves taking creative risks and has a thoughtful approach to both UI and UX. Your goals will be twofold: how can you best improve our students’ learning experience, and how can you do so in a magnificently beautiful way?

    What you’ll do:

    Improve conversion rates of final sales by 10% by improving the design of opt-in pages, landing pages, home pages, etc.
    Improve our students’ learning experience by creating/iterating on platform features dedicated to student success.
    Create aesthetically beautiful assets for our platform, including: thumbnails, banners, product images, worksheets, etc. 
    You’ll be a good fit if:
  • You value thorough research. This includes (but isn’t limited to) competitor research, user interviews, and usability testing. You also understand that at times the best inspiration can be drawn from the most unlikely places.
  • You constantly notice & appreciate great design. It doesn’t matter if you’re walking down the aisle in a grocery store or passing time on Dribbble. You’re able to spot and appreciate well crafted color palettes and delightful aesthetics.
  • You believe that UX is not an afterthought to UI. Everything at Jumpcut revolves around our students -- that means we don’t implement designs just because they’re beautiful, but because they’re functional as well.
  • Design risks don’t scare you. In order to truly be innovative, we believe you have to be comfortable taking design risks frequently. We’re looking for a designer that isn’t afraid to try something truly unconventional in an effort to help our students learn.
  • What we’re looking for:
  • Expert level proficiency with programs equivalent to: Adobe PS, Illustrator, Sketch, Figma, etc.
  • Experience working with a front-end developer to implement your designs.
  • Experience working on designs for a consumer-facing site where millions of people have seen your work.
  • 2+ years of experience with UI/UX and/or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates your ability to craft delightful UI and UX.
